Man, Family in Hiding After Fatal Shooting

A Paramount man was in hiding with his family Monday, one day after he shot and killed an alleged gang member who threatened to kill members of the man’s family.

Jesse Vasquez, 24, of Lynwood, was shot by the man, who lives on San Marcus Street, about 7 p.m. Sunday. Vasquez died a short time later at Charter Suburban Hospital, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Al Grant.

The shooting occurred about an hour after gang members allegedly took a bicycle belonging to the man’s son. When the boy recovered the bicycle, Vasquez and a companion went to the home, confronted the boy’s father and threatened to kill members of his family, Grant said.

Vasquez reached for a pistol in his waistband and the father shot him with a .38-caliber pistol. Grant said the shooting appeared to have been in self-defense.

The father, whose name was not released, was not arrested.

He left the home with his family late Sunday or early Monday, fearing gang retaliation, Grant said.
