Hungary’s last crown prince said today he might run for president in the November elections if this would help to secure the East Bloc state’s transition to democracy.

Otto von Habsburg, a 76-year-old member of the European Parliament, said two Hungarian opposition parties were collecting signatures in support of fielding him as a candidate in presidential elections slated for November.

Habsburg, the son of Emperor Karl who ruled Austria-Hungary from 1916 until the empire broke up in 1918, says he could help Hungary more by staying in the European Parliament, where he is a West German Christian Democrat member, but he would not rule out running for the Hungarian presidency.
