The Nation : Bush Opposes Population Agency Funds

Share

President Bush has sent a letter to congressional leaders threatening to veto a foreign aid spending bill that provides $15 million to the United Nations Fund for Population Activities on the grounds that the group is helping pay for population control policies in China that mandate abortion, the Washington Post reported. Administration officials confirmed that Bush sent the letter Friday at the request of GOP lawmakers who have waged a battle against funding for UNFPA since 1985. The $15-million package was approved in the Senate as part of the foreign aid bill, but not in the House. A House-Senate conference committee is scheduled to work out differences in the bills beginning next week.
