In an apparent bid to smooth the way for his visit next week to the United States, President Roh Tae Woo strongly urged South Koreans to curb growing anti-American sentiment. In his weekly radio broadcast, Roh charged that dissidents and young radicals have fallen prey to North Korea’s hope to take Seoul by force through their demands for the immediate withdrawal of 40,000 U.S. troops based in the south. Roh warned against violent anti-U.S. protests, which he said have caused some antipathy toward South Korea in Congress. Several U.S. senators recently called for a phased pullout of troops, contending that South Korea will be able to defend itself against the north in a few years.
