WORLD IN BRIEF : CHINA : 200 Student Activists Reportedly in Jail

From Times staff and wire reports

More than 200 student activists and intellectuals involved in the pro-democracy movement that was crushed in June are being held in a maximum-security prison for special political prisoners on the outskirts of Beijing, according to information smuggled out of the prison. The prisoners in the Qincheng Prison are denied contact with their families and given political indoctrination courses aimed at getting them to confess to their “errors,” said the sources, who asked not to be identified. The government has accused the activists of having engaged in a “counterrevolutionary rebellion” aimed at overthrowing the Communist system.
