LEUKERBAD, Switzerland — A Swiss Alps training camp for 12 top East German athletes was canceled abruptly by the country’s track federation “for financial reasons, among others,” it was revealed today.
Ursula Cina, spokeswoman for Leukerbad’s tourism office, said an official telex from East Berlin on Tuesday said the athletes, including eight Olympic and world champions, will not attend a three-week “training and rehabilitation camp” starting Saturday.
Leukerbad officials had announced Monday that the East Germans would come to this mountain resort and spa.
Cina said East German officials gave no other explanation than in the brief telex saying, “We regret to inform you that for financial reasons, among others, we cannot make use of this opportunity for a rehabilitation and training camp.”
Joachim Krebs, the East German federation’s deputy general secretary, said the reasons for canceling were “complicated” and added, “There are no political reasons.”
