NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D. C. : Panel Sees Potential Cruise Ship Dangers

The National Transportation Safety Board has called for tighter government oversight over foreign-flagged cruise ships operated by U.S. companies. Based on a study of 36 passenger vessel accidents in the last 15 years, board members said the potential for a major disaster is high, citing untrained and non-English speaking crews, a lack of life vests, inadequate safety equipment, unsafe ship designs and other problems.
