A freight train derailed and spilled a large quantity of a toxic, flammable chemical Thursday night, forcing the evacuation of residents within a half-mile of the accident, authorities said. No injuries were immediately reported.

The chemical, identified as hexane, is a flammable liquid which if vaporized and inhaled can cause irritation of the lungs, other respiratory problems and eye irritation. The state Department of Environmental Conservation sent hazardous waste cleanup crews to the scene, fire department dispatcher David Squires said.
