Czechoslovak Military Tours to Be Shortened
The government plans to cut the length of mandatory military service.
“It has been decided to . . . submit a proposal to the Federal Assembly (Parliament) to shorten national military service to 18 months,” Communist Party leader Milos Jakes told his party’s Central Committee.
At present, military service lasts two years for most young men.
In a speech delivered Wednesday and printed in full by the party newspaper Rude Pravo on Thursday, Jakes said the ruling Communist Party must pay more attention to young people and let them play a role in managing the economy and in public affairs.
