Students Demonstrate in Papua New Guinea
Hundreds of students demonstrated outside Papua New Guinea government offices Thursday to protest plans for one of the country’s biggest copper and gold mines to dump waste into a major river.
They said the government had signed a death warrant for people living on the river by approving the dumping by the OK Tedi mine. About 20,000 people live in the area.
The government granted permission two weeks ago for the mine to dump up to 150,000 tons of waste a day into the river despite a report that showed it would badly affect the environment.
