San Diego police were dismayed Thursday when a 31-year-old Mira Mesa man, who walked into police headquarters acting strangely, had to be taken to a hospital, where he became unconscious and died.

Kurush (Cyrus) Kamyaran, a real estate student, entered the lobby of downtown police headquarters, acting “very agitated” and “bizarre,” a police spokesman said.

Police handcuffed him as a safety precaution and placed him in a chair. Kamyaran bolted from the chair and ran out the door with the handcuffs still on, the spokesman said.

Three officers caught up with him and, after a struggle, took him into custody. Kamyaran, suffering from minor cuts and bruises, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for evaluation, where he passed out and died at 3:26 p.m., spokesman David Cohen said.

Although Kamyaran had not been charged with any crime, he was in police custody when he died, so homicide detectives are investigating, Cohen said.

Deputy Coroner Penne Hammerstead said the cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed next week.
