WORLD IN BRIEF - ANGOLA - Savimbi Said to OK Truce in Civil War
Rebel leader Jonas Savimbi said he is ready to accept an immediate cease-fire to end the civil war in Angola, the British Foreign Office reported. Savimbi told British Foreign Secretary John Major that the cease-fire should lead to peace talks, initially with President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire as chairman. Savimbi said direct talks between his National Union for the Total Independence of Angola and the Marxist government of Luanda could follow at a later date. Savimbi’s talks with Major were the first between UNITA and a British Cabinet minister.
