Anti-Defection Devices on China Planes Reported

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Chinese air force planes are equipped with an anti-defection device that limits how far pilots can fly, Taiwan’s military said Friday.
A statement said the device was discovered after examination of the MIG-19 flown by Chinese defector Jiang Wenhao to Taiwan in September.
The statement said the device limits speed and fuel if a pilot departs from a preset direction or exceeds a predetermined distance. Military sources said the device was installed in planes late in 1987.
Jiang was the 14th airman to defect since 1960 from the communist mainland to nationalist Taiwan.
