NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Emergency Declared as Storm Rips Areas

Officials in New York declared a state of emergency after fierce thunderstorms packing winds of up to 85 m.p.h. battered upstate areas, killing at least one person and downing trees and power lines. A 72-year-old Chenango County man was killed when a tornado carried his trailer home 120 feet before it crashed into a utility pole, police in Norwich said. In Medina, all of the community’s 7,000 residents were left without power as most of the damage was centered on northern Niagara and western Orleans County.
