‘Green Aid’ Sought to Combat Warming

Wealthy nations must give “green aid” to developing countries if the world is to combat the threat of global warming, a U.N. official said Monday. The aid could include transferring advanced technology in clean-burning fuels, providing technical training and exchanging information as well as giving money, said Mostafa Tolba, executive director of the U.N. Environment Program.

“Progress under way will only be effective if all countries--developed and developing--act in concert to address global warming,” he told a coal conference here.

“Such action must revolve around increased and effective assistance to the South (developing nations). Not a diversion in existing aid programs but new funding specifically for global environmental protection.”
