MCI Communications Corp.: The Washington-based long-distance communications firm reported record third-quarter net income of $165 million, up 58% over the same period last year. Revenue was up 23% to $1.7 billion. The firm said it was awarded several major commercial contracts during the period, including a multimillion-dollar agreement to provide telecommunications services to the legislative branch of the U.S. government; it said it also posted growth in residential services.
