A teachers’ strike went into its second day Wednesday, closing some schools in Mexico City and five states, news reports said.

The dissident Democratic Coordinate, which claims the loyalty of about half of the National Education Workers Union’s approximately 1 million members, called a 72-hour strike Tuesday to demand union democracy.

“The national leadership of the union has not complied with the agreements it made in May,” Jesus Martin del Campo, a dissident leader, was quoted as saying in Wednesday’s editions of El Financiero.

A monthlong teachers’ strike in April and May ended when the dissidents accepted a 25% raise, which applies to all teachers, and pledges of more union democracy.
