AST Research: The personal computer manufacturer in Irvine reported a nine-fold increase in net income for the fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 29 of $2.9 million contrasted with $306,000 a year earlier. Sales were up about 6% to $114.5 million from $108.4 million. AST attributed the improved performance to the introduction of its 386 computer and an increase in sales overseas.
