Afghan rebel rockets killed 12 people and wounded 35 in Kabul, the Afghan government reported. It said U.S.-backed guerrillas also shelled the strategic town of Khost, near the border with Pakistan, killing six servicemen and three civilians. Meanwhile, civilian flights at the Kabul airport were suspended as Soviet transport planes brought in weapons and food in what diplomats said was the largest Soviet airlift since February, when Soviet troops ended their nine-year intervention in Afghanistan.
