FTC Cites Title Insurance Companies: The Federal Trade Commission ruled that five national title insurance companies illegally fixed title search fees in six states. The FTC found the title companies set prices for title search and examination services by participating in a rating bureau that pooled data on their policies and claims. The agency ordered them to set future rates independently in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Arizona and Montana. The five title insurance firms ordered to change the way they set their rates are Ticor Title Insurance Co., Chicago Title Insurance Co., Safeco Title Insurance Co., Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. and Stewart Title Guaranty Co.
