NATION IN BRIEF : TEXAS : Abortion Not Issue at Legislative Session
Gov. Bill Clements of Texas will not allow abortion restrictions on the agenda of any upcoming special legislative session, a spokeswoman said. Clements said the Nov. 14 special session will be limited to workers’ compensation reform. “We’re not going to cloud the issue of the special session on workers’ compensation by putting in these other extraneous issues,” he said. Rossanna Salazar, Clements’ press secretary, said he also would not allow abortion issues during a spring special legislative session on public school financing. Clements, a Republican, is not seeking re-election. Bill Price, president of Texans United for Life, said he considered the governor’s comments a “betrayal.” “He’s playing political football with the lives of unborn children,” Price said.
