Nation : MARYLAND : Abernathy Assailed by NAACP Board

The Board of Directors of the NAACP endorsed a statement blasting the Rev. Ralph Abernathy for his book that alleges Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. engaged in extramarital affairs on his last night alive. Meeting in Baltimore, the board backed a statement by the group’s executive director, Benjamin L. Hooks, that said Abernathy desecrated the memory of King in his book “And the Walls Came Tumbling Down” and calls on him to “quickly correct the distortions of his book.” “Priests are not called upon to confess other people’s sins,” Hooks said.
