Igor Korobchinski of the Soviet Union, the men’s all-around champion, earned a third gold medal, but the women’s champion, Svetlana Boginskaya, was upset in the apparatus final at the World Gymnastics Championships at Stuttgart, West Germany.
The United States team got its first medal in apparatus finals in eight years when Brandy Johnson shared the silver with Romania’s Cristina Bontas in the vault. Both scored 9.950. Olesia Dudnik of the Soviet Union won the gold with 9.987.
