Something to Chew on: Fruitcake Tops Unwanted Gift List

Pity the poor fruitcake. The venerable holiday standard tops the list of adults’ least-wanted Christmas presents, according to a survey released today by MasterCard International.

Those wanting to keep a lid on holiday spending will be happy to note fur coats were the second least-wanted item respondents hoped to find under the tree.

“Fruitcakes are universally disliked,” said Wendie Winters, a MasterCard spokeswoman. “But fur coats sort of surprised us. Either people don’t like the expense, or want to select it themselves or the negative fur campaign is having an impact.”

Rounding out the list of the most unpopular gift items were self-improvement books, liquor, candy, kitchen appliances and exercise equipment.

Among the 504 adults polled by MasterCard, 68% said they would prefer to receive a practical rather than frivolous gift.

Topping the most-wanted gift category was a trip or vacation. Sweaters were second, followed by tickets to an event, jewelry, clothing accessories, cameras and lingerie.
