Libya Plans to Mourn Victims of Colonialism
Libya will hold a day of mourning Thursday for victims of Italian colonialism, the official Libyan news agency JANA announced Sunday.
All international transport and communications systems will be halted to mark “the painful memory of Italian colonialism on Libya and its people,” JANA said.
Italy invaded Libya, then part of the Ottoman Empire, in October, 1911, and ruled the country until its defeat in World War II. Libya became independent in 1951 under King Idris, who was overthrown in 1969 by revolutionary leader Moammar Kadafi.
