Compton : Teachers Union Endorses 5 for School Board

Share

Five school board candidates, including incumbent John Stewart, have been endorsed by the Compton Education Assn., which represents more than 1,000 teachers in the Compton Unified School District. The union also gave a $500 campaign contribution to each candidate it endorsed.

Challengers who won endorsements were Omar Bradley, a Lynwood High School teacher; Sadie R. Benham, a child-care center teacher; the Rev. Gary Daniels, a clergyman and teacher, and Saul E. Lankster, a former Compton police officer and school board member who is now a florist.

Bradley, a teacher in the Lynwood Unified School District, is trying to oust Lynn Dymally. In July, Dymally was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Bernice Woods, who resigned after being elected to the Compton City Council. Dymally is seeking reelection to her board seat, which carries a two-year term.

The other challengers are all seeking four-year terms, trying to defeat incumbent board members Sam Littleton, Kelvin Filer and Manuel Correa. In all, 30 people are competing for the five school trustee positions. The election is Nov. 7.
