NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Bakker Church Told to Vacate Storefront
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Jim and Tammy Bakker’s 5-month-old New Covenant Church and TV ministry will have to move out of its Orlando shopping mall storefront after Sunday’s service, less than a week after Bakker began a 45-year federal prison term for fraud. Mall owner Stewart Gilman said he already has signed a lease with a new tenant. Gilman said he did not ask the ministry to leave because of Bakker’s conviction and sentence, but because of the ministry’s actions. The ministry had moved much of its property in hopes of paying less rent.
