NATION IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Exxon Captain to Be Tried in Anchorage
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The criminal trial of fired Exxon tanker captain Joseph Hazelwood will begin in Anchorage Jan. 20, an Alaska Superior Court judge said. Judge Karl Johnstone ruled Hazelwood, former captain of the Exxon Valdez, should be tried in Alaska’s largest city rather than in Valdez, site of the 11-million-gallon oil spill on March 24. Johnstone said Anchorage has the best pool of potential jurors for this case. Charges against Hazelwood include negligent discharge of oil and driving a tanker while intoxicated.
