Corridors--An agreement to preserve more than 9,500 additional acres of open space in Irvine, approved Tuesday by the City Council, includes provisions for narrow “spines” of land connecting the parcels to each other and to the Cleveland National Forest and Pacific Ocean.

Wildlife will use these natural corridors to move between the open spaces, biologists say, adding that such passageways will become more vital as Southern California’s natural areas are reduced.

Under the agreement with the Irvine Co., Irvine will have more than 16,000 acres of protected open space. Among the areas protected in the latest deal is Quail Hill--along the San Diego Freeway near Sand Canyon Road--where hundreds of migrating Canada geese spend the winters.
