Italian Mafia boss-turned-painter Luciano Liggio has gone on a painting strike in prison following a refusal to grant him semi-liberty and allow him to take 400 canvases out of prison, friends of his told the press on Sunday. Liggio, 64, the suspected boss of the Sicilian Corleone family, Italy’s most powerful Mafia clan, took up painting while serving a life sentence for murdering a clan rival and has sold some of his paintings. Two weeks ago, judges turned down his request to leave the Cagliari, Sardinia, jail during the day to work as a painter and interior decorator although Liggio pledged to return each evening to prison.
