Bush Backs New Coffee Price Supports: President Bush, in a letter to Colombian President Virgilio Barco, has given new support for international coffee price supports as a way to help Colombia fight its war against drug cartels. “With good will and serious negotiation among all the parties. . . . I believe we can work out the differences blocking renewal of the coffee agreement,” Bush said in the letter. Colombian Minister of Economic Development Carlos Marulanda said Bush’s letter helped support his belief that a new agreement on coffee price supports, to replace one abandoned in July, could be reached by mid-1990. Spot coffee prices have fallen by half since the end of price supports.
