Economic reforms have cost 3 million people their jobs in the Soviet Union since 1986, and the number could hit 16 million by the year 2005, the Communist Party daily Pravda said today.

In some southern Soviet republics wracked by ethnic violence, 25% of the work force has been unemployed for the last three years, Pravda said.

The Pravda article gave no overall jobless rate for the country, which has a total work force of around 130 million.
