Most of the 1,100 U.S. Army troops sent to St. Croix by President Bush six weeks ago to maintain order in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo will be replaced by a smaller military police contingent, an official said. Mark Wallace, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency office in Christiansted, said the troops were expecting redeployment orders from the Pentagon this week. Gov. Alexander Farrelly had requested that the bulk of the troops be removed from the island, indicating that they are no longer needed to maintain order, Wallace said.
