VIRGINIA : Bakker Asks Release on Bail in Appeal

A lawyer for Jim Bakker asked a three-judge panel of the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond to release the jailed TV evangelist on bail during his appeal, disputing a government claim that his followers would help him flee. Bakker was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy and given a 45-year sentence. Attorney Milton Grusmark told the panel that Bakker, who is at a federal facility in Talladega, Ala., would not flee.
