Beverly Hills : Civic Center on Schedule

Share

Work on the new Civic Center is proceeding on schedule, with the library expected to move into its new quarters over Christmas, the official in charge of construction projects for Beverly Hills said Monday.

City offices are set to transfer from temporary quarters into the rehabilitated City Hall in the first week of January and the Police Department will move into its offices in the second week of the month, said Howard Ratner, economic development manager.

The Civic Center project was begun in 1985 but was delayed by debates over funding and by the discovery of asbestos in the walls of the old library building.

Its construction has been paid for by issuing revenue bonds to cover the cost, which has been estimated at $83 million. The City Council recently voted to increase its debt to between $110 million and $120 million to complete the project and finance other programs.
