Bush Backs Lawmakers’ Bid for Federal Pay Hike

President Bush will support “any reasonable proposal” by lawmakers to obtain a pay raise for themselves and other top federal officials and judges, Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said Friday.

A congressional source said that a package being considered would provide a “cost-of-living” raise for top officials of about 8% on Jan. 1.

Pay scales would be increased by an additional 25%--the amount Bush had asked earlier this year--in January, 1990. Members of Congress, in exchange, would give up all outside speaking fees, the source said.
