The Issue of Raising Sales Tax for Roads

Share

Transportation is part of the cost of most good services. Congestion increases the cost of transportation.

The best information we have on these costs is from an extensive study by the Southern California Assn. of Governments. Business costs in 1988 dollars are estimated to be $247 per family in Orange County in 1989. These costs are too high for business to absorb so everyone, rich or poor, pays for them in the costs of the goods and services they buy.

Additionally, commuting to work and personal driving involves more cost. Congestion costs to commuters are estimated to be $67 per person for 1989.

Another cost exists. Inflation. Inflation at only 4% per year will make all work delayed for five years cost 21% more. Work delayed 10 years will cost 46% more. If Measure M fails, much work planned for five years from now will be delayed to 10 years for lack of money.

We see few results from our taxes. If Measure M passes we will see tangible improvements that will benefit us and our children.
