Changing the Date of Tustin Election

The Tustin Area Republican Assembly opposes the recent action by the Tustin City Council to move the 1990 city elections from November to April.

Consolidating the city election with the November general election assures maximum opportunity to vote in the council races, since general elections invariably attract the largest voter turnouts.

The council has chosen an action that will cost Tustin taxpayers an estimated additional $13,000. This is an unwarranted expense. It spends the people’s money on an election whose very positioning ensures that most of them will not participate in it.

The change in election date was made in a manner that precluded much in the way of public consideration and debate over the issue. No changes in the rules governing elections should be made without giving the voters ample opportunity to weigh the options. The Tustin Area Republican Assembly therefore opposes shifting the Tustin city election from November to April and recommends that further public hearings be held so that the final decision will be representative of the community itself and not simply of a majority of council members.
