Cruising in certain areas of Santa Ana will become a crime if the City Council approves an emergency ordinance at its meeting Monday night.

If passed, the ordinance would allow police to issue citations to drivers who cruise along Bristol Street between McFadden and Warner avenues during weekend evening hours. The proposal requires a two-thirds vote to be approved as an emergency ordinance so that it may take effect immediately.

Cruising is defined in the ordinance as “the driving of a motor vehicle three or more times within a four-hour period, in a particular direction, past a traffic-control point established at or near a place where traffic is congested.”

If the ordinance is passed, the city would be able to post signs along the stretch where crusing would be prohibited.

Anaheim and Newport Beach already forbid cruising in congested or residential areas.
