Nation IN BRIEF : INDIANA : Gary Voters Back Casino Gambling

Voters in Gary, an economically depressed steel town, endorsed legalized gambling in hotel-casino facilities by 13,309 votes, or 60.4%, to 8,733 votes, or 39.6%, against. Only 32.3% of the registered voters cast ballots in the non-binding referendum. Despite the results, Gov. Evan Bayh said he will not support gambling in Gary. State legislators from Gary had promised to bring the issue to the 1990 session of the General Assembly if the referendum passed.
