Nicaragua Ends Contra Truce
So much outrage because President Ortega announced his intention to end the cease-fire agreement with the Contras. It appears to be quite a reasonable move in view of the fact that the U.S.-backed Contras continue to slaughter the people of Nicaragua. His timing has been severely criticized. What better forum than a gathering of leaders meeting to celebrate peace and democracy.
It is outrageous for our President to act so self-righteously when we all know that arms were sold to Iran in order to fund the Contras. There were those who acted without consent of Congress and it is rumored that some were very prominent in our government. We must not forget the Iran-Contra scandal.
President Ortega should not be faulted for seeking justice for his people.
