At least 36 people were killed and 15 wounded as rival Tamil guerrilla groups battled in eastern Sri Lanka. Military officials said about 50 members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the largest Tamil rebel group, raided two rival camps and killed 30 men. Six Tigers also were killed. It was the first clash between rival Tamil groups since Indian peacekeeping soldiers left the area two weeks ago. The Tamils are engaged in a six-year-old battle against the government, dominated by majority Sinhalese, for a separate Tamil homeland in the Indian Ocean island nation.
