Former President Richard M. Nixon, who left the White House in disgrace, made an unannounced return Sunday night to brief President Bush and senior Administration officials on his recent six-day visit to China.

White House Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater announced the dinner meeting to reporters today and said Nixon had given Bush the “general impressions” he formed in talks with Chinese officials on the strains in U.S.-Chinese relations following the violent suppression of the pro-democracy movement in June.

While refusing to divulge the substance of what Nixon had to say, Fitzwater said Bush “found those views quite interesting and productive” and remained “determined to preserve the relationship with China.”

Fitzwater said Nixon arrived Sunday for the dinner and returned to his New Jersey home afterward. Among the others who attended were Vice President Dan Quayle, White House chief of staff John H. Sununu, national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, CIA Director William H. Webster and Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence S. Eagleburger.
