SDSU-UCLA To Meet In NCAA Soccer Opener

San Diego State (14-4-3) will play UCLA (16-3-1) in a first-round NCAA tournament match at 2 p.m. Sunday at El Camino Community College. The Aztecs are ranked 17th and UCLA is third in the Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America poll. This is the third consecutive season the Aztecs have been invited to the NCAA tournament. Last season, SDSU was defeated by UCLA in the first round, 2-1. In 1987, SDSU lost to Clemson in the championship game.

The UC San Diego men’s soccer team will play at St. John’s University of Collegeville, Minn., Sunday in a NCAA Division III quarterfinal match. The Tritons are the defending national champions.

Both teams are coming off upsets in the first round of the tournament. No. 17 UCSD (13-5-3) defeated fifth-ranked Claremont, 1-0, and St. John’s (10-2-4) defeated No. 13 Colorado College on penalty kicks.

The winner will advance to the national championship tournament Nov. 18 and 19 at a site to be determined.

BOXING

Larry Dixon of San Diego edged former 139-pound world champion Igor Ruzhnikov of the Soviet Union in the USSR-USA Heavyweight Boxing Invitational on Monday.

The invitational featured the top six weight classes in amateur boxing.

The victory by Dixon, 21, America’s third-ranked amateur in the 147-pound class, was one of two 3-2 decisions on the 10-bout card. It pulled the USA team into a 3-3 tie, but the Soviets swept the next three fights and won the card 6-4.

FOOTBALL

Mike Turiace, an Arkansas Tech sophomore from Fallbrook High School, completed 16 of 28 passes, one for a touchdown Saturday in a 17-14 victory over Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). He was named NAIA player of the week.

Ouachita Baptist entered the game as the top NAIA Division I team in pass defense having allowed only 91 yards per game.
