Massive layoffs at Orange County aerospace and electronics companies over the past year have reduced the labor force in those industries by more than 6,000 workers, but overall, the number of jobs in the county increased by 24,000, or 2.1%, from August, 1988, to August, 1989. The greatest gains, according to the state Employment Development Department, were in the service industry and wholesale trade, which added 11,700 and 6,800 workers, increasing 4.1% and 9.6%, respectively. The biggest decrease was reported in the transportation and public utilities sector, which lost 4,200 jobs, a 14% reduction.
