Two Austrian engineers were killed and three wounded when suspected Muslim guerrillas ambushed a government convoy on a mountain road in the southern Philippines on Wednesday, military officials said.

Officials said three Filipinos were also wounded, including a member of the convoy’s military escort, which was taking a construction team to a hydroelectric dam site 500 miles southeast of Manila.

Army spokesmen said the gunmen are believed to be Muslim separatists opposed to a plebiscite scheduled for Nov. 19 on Manila’s offer of limited autonomy for Muslims.
