WORLD : Ozal Becomes Turk President
Turgut Ozal, premier for the last six years, was sworn in as president today in a Parliament ceremony boycotted by opposition parties. He named Yildirim Akbulut, speaker of Parliament, as the new premier.
In his inaugural address, Ozal said one of Turkey’s main aims should be “to occupy its distinguished place in the European Community,” and he called for reform he said is necessary to become an EC member.
All 155 opposition deputies also stayed away from the 450-seat Parliament when Ozal was elected president Oct. 31.
