About 1,000 left-wing demonstrators, demanding the dismantling of strategic American military bases in the country, burned effigies of President Corazon Aquino and Uncle Sam at the U.S. Embassy on Thursday.

“Cory Aquino, seller of sovereignty,” read a huge streamer, referring to Aquino’s visit to the United States. The protesters chanted, “Yankees, go home; bases out.”
