Although the number of single-family home permits issued in August (732) was about average for the year (738 per month), 1989 continues to run behind last year in this basic index of future construction activity. The 5,903 permits awarded so far this year leave 1989 28% behind last year’s pace and 14% in arrears of 1987 (but virtually even with 1986).

A huge decline in the number of permits issued for unincorporated areas along with large dips in Tustin, San Clemente, Yorba Linda and Huntington Beach are at the heart of this year’s sub-1988 totals.
