From Times staff and wire reports

The executive director of San Francisco General Hospital announced he will resign, effective June 30, after more than three years at the county facility. Phillip Sowa, 42, cited “personal and family” reasons for his departure. He said he reached the goals he set for himself when he came to the troubled hospital in 1986. Sowa said the hospital received $72 million in revenues this year, compared to about $54 million in fiscal year 1986-87. “We have turned the (hospital’s) first surplus,” Sowa said. He is the city’s highest-paid administrator with an annual salary of $145,000.
